While Justin recuperates in the hospital from the attack, Brian makes secret nightly visits to watch over him. Jennifer tells Brian to stay away, echoing his own guilt by blaming him for having made her son a target. Chris Hobbs pleads guilty to assault and gets a light sentence. Michael comes back from Portland for a visit that turns out to be a return as he and Dr. David have broken up. Lindsay takes Melanie, Ted, and Emmett to her sister’s wedding, where she suppresses her lesbian self for her family. But, when the charade proves too difficult to keep up, she proposes marriage to Melanie while toasting the bride.

Ron Cowen : There’s the person who suffers the attack and the posttraumatic stress that they have to deal with in recovering from their attack, but there’s also the witness. The person who witnesses the attack feels a tremendous amount of helplessness and guilt. There was nothing they could do to stop it and they feel a sense of responsibility because of that. Witnessing an act of violence can often be as devastating as being the victim. I feel that was what Brian’s situation was at the beginning of the second season, that he felt incredibly guilty.
