Intro :
When she’s too busy to talk, Debbie expresses herself through her tee-shirts. At first they inspire laughter, but then
one realizes they are not always that funny.
These messages are often subliminal,
as Debbie is a character constantly moving. The texts are ostensibly shown during
comic scenes. But in more serious situations, Sharon Gless is shot in close-up;
this way, the tee-shirt slogans – which distract the viewer’s attention - cannot
be seen.
Sometimes, Emmett, Justin, Michael, Lindsay and Melanie, as well
as Daphne, Hunter, and even Gus deliver similar messages.
The originator
of these mini-farces is costume designer Patrick Antosh. Along with his assistants,
Lisa Renee Reed and Meredith Wilson, he creates 20% of the show’s costumes –
the majority of which are for Debbie, who “throws together” what she wears.
Patrick Antosh initially worked on Robert Longo’s film “Johnny
Mnemonic”, starring Keanu Reeves. He was in Paris for the new collections when
he heard that Queer As Folk was getting ready to shoot in Toronto. He caught
the next plane home to land the job – a job he describes as a “designer’s dream.”
During the fittings, he puts heart into his work, as we can
see in pic #2. He even treats himself to making an appearance at the beginning
of episode 314 (pic#3).
