Events surrounding Michael's thirtieth birthday are far from celebratory as Melanie feels that she's growing distant from Lindsay, and Emmett has an HIV scare, forcing him to make a promise to God swearing off men. But the real drama comes after Debbie asks Brian to let Micheal go so her son can have a chance at happiness with David. Brian throws a surprise birthday party where the biggest shock is delivered when Tracy arrives and finds out that Michael is gay.



Peter Paige : My favorite episode from the first season is the birthday party. I just think it’s a masterpiece of writing. At that point in the story line there were ten of us all in one room, all coming to a head in these really interesting, complicated, emotional story lines. It all plays out in this one night at this party in such a complicated human way. I think that was the finest episode we did the entire first year.
